What is Kali Masi?

Kali Masi popularly known as Kadaknath Chicken is a unique Indian breed of chicken belong to Tribal region of Madhya Pradesh especially Jhabua & Dhar district. The word Kadaknath is derived from two word:- Kadak & Nath, the word “Kadak” means Hard and “Nath” means Lord. Traditionally it is raised by the Local tribal community of Jhabua & Dhar district of Madhya pradesh. It is also found in other trible area Bastar district of Chattisgarh & its surrounding region. The Bhils & Bhilalas tribes/commuinites are raising this Kadaknath chicken for generations due to its Nutritional & Medicinal benefits & cultural traditions.

  • The color of Kadaknath Chicken is black or greyish black in color due to high melamine pigment content. Its black coloration extends to various part of chicken including feather, skin, muscles, plumage & some internal organs. 
  • It is India’s only black meat chicken known for high protein content ( 24.45% approx), high Iron content ( 10 times higher than normal chicken) , low in fat ( 0.73-1.03% approx) , low cholesterol content (Approx 185mg per 100gms)  and believe to enhance stamina, support cardiovascular health & can strengthen the immunity.

Characteristice of Kadaknath chicken:-

Due to unique characteristic & several health benefit of its meat & egg, its demand has increased manifolds in the Indian market. Some of the unique characterisctic are:- 

  • Apperance & Color :- The color of Kadaknath Chicken is black or greyish black in color due to high melamine content. Its black coloration extends to various part of chicken including feather, skin, meat, blood, plumage & some internal organs. 
  • Meat quality:- Its meat is lean but firm with rich flavor due to higher protein & low fat content. Its meat is tender, succulent with earthy flavor. 
  • Weight :- The average weight of an adult kadaknath chicken is approx 1.5-02 kg. 
  • Egg quality:The average egg production of kadaknath chicken is approx 90-110 eggs per year per chicken.  Its egg is approx 35-45gms in weight in size.
  • Medicianal properties :- known for high protein content ( 24.45% approx), high Iron content ( 10 times higher than normal chicken) , low in fat ( 0.73-1.03% approx) , low cholesterol content (Approx 185mg per 100gms)  and believe to enhance stamina, support cardiovascular health & can strengthen the immunity. The Central Food Technological and Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore, studied the medicinal properties of Kadaknath meat and found it suitable for heart patients as it increases blood supply to the heart

About its egg

Its egg are known for its unique flavor & high nutritional value as compare to the normal chicken egg. Its size is slightly smaller than normal chicken eggs usually around 35-45gms in weight.  The color of eggs is usually light brown color with pinkish tint. 

  • It has rich & earthy taste and suitable for omelets, scarmbled eggs, fried egg preparion.  Kadaknath chicken usually lay less number of eggs as compare to the normal chicken. It lays approx 90-110 eggs annually as compare to the commercial chicken which lays approx 300-320eggs per annum.
  • It provide  apporox 11.67% protein/approx 25-27gms of protein per 100gms of meat , low fat (less than 1%) , low cholesterol ( around 184 mg per 100gms) , Antioxidant properties, Omega-3 fatty acid, High in Iron, calcium, Phosphorus & Vitamins B1,B2,B6,B12, C and E etc.

Brief History of its origin 

Indigenous tribe of Bhils & Bhilalas community of Madhya Pradesh have tradition of rearing this special types of black chicken since long from generation to generation looking into its several medicinal & health benefits as well as high market value.  They used to sell its meat & eggs to local market at high price which was the main source of income of trible people of M.P. The breed is considered to have originated from Kathiwar Alirajapur Jungle in Jhabua District of Madhya Pradesh. 

  • Jhabua, Dhar & Barwani District of Madhya Pradesh as well as adjoing districts of Rajasthan & Gujrat is considered its home for production.  It is recognized as Black Gold & Pride of Jhabua. Kadaknath chicken is locally known as Kali masi because of black flesh.  

Nutritional Value of Kadaknath chicken:-

Several studies shows that Kadaknath chicken several medicinal properties & health benefits. The central Food technological & research Institute, Mysore ( CFTRI) in his studies found that kadaknath chicken is good for the heart patients as it help in supplying blood to the heart. Details of Nutritional value are as under:- 

  • High protein content:- Kadaknath chicken contain high amount of protein as compare to the other types of chicken. It contains approx 25-27gms of protein per 100gms of meat. 
  • Low fat content:- It contains very low amount of fat in their meat usually less than 1%. Its meat is lean and has low cholesterol 
  • Rich in Vitamins & Minerals :- Kadaknath chicken is rich in many essential Minerals like Iron, Phosphorus,  Zinc, calcium and Vitmins like B1, B2, B6, B12 ,C  & E. It contians 18 amino acids including 8 essential one.
  • Antioxidant properties:- It contains natural antioxidant like Carnosine & Anserine which helps in reducing the Inflamation & stress.
  • The tribal people of Madhya Pradesh uses the Kadaknath chicken blood in the treatment of cronic disease. 

Geographical Indication Tag 

The Kadaknath chicken of Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh was awarded by Geographical indication Tag by Govt of India on 30th July 2018.  Its application was made by Gramin Vikas Trust of Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh under the application number 378 in respect of Poultry meat under class 29. Its GI Tag registration is valid upto Feb 2032.

Govt Initiatives to boost the production of Kadaknath chicken :-

As per the Govt website (https://www.myscheme.gov.in/schemes/sokcos ) Madhya pradesh government is giving subsidies to Trible people of Jhabua & Dhar district and its adjoing area for Infrastructure support on setting up the kadaknath poultry farm, production & its transporation. MP Govt also giving subsidies upto 75% in buying chicks , food, medicine ,transporation etc for farming.

  • The central goverment of India also sanctioned funds for breeding of kadaknath chicken in Madhya Pradesh as an Immunity booster.
  • Govt of Madhya Pradesh also promoting this Chicken under One District One Product (ODOP Scheme). The District of Jhabua declared Kadaknath Chicken as its ODOP Product.
  • Recently BCCI (Board of control for cricket in India) has suggested Team India players to include Kadaknath chicken in the players diet. 
  • Kadaknath chicken is reared at the farmhous of the Madhya Pradesh state livestock & poultry development corporation in Bhopal.

Market rates of Kadaknath Chicken :-

The current market rate of Kadaknath chicken vary from state to state. In Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh, its rate is between Rs 500 to Rs 700/- per kg(Whole chicken).  In Delhi/NCR the rate of whole kadaknath chicken are between Rs 900 to 1500/- per kg whereas the processed chicken are between Rs 1200-1600/- per kg
