What is Palani Panchamirtham?

Palani Panchamirtham is a Traditional prasad prepared at the Palani Murugan temple in Tamil Nadu, India. It is made up of 05 traditional ingredients consisting of Banana, Ghee, Honey , Jaggery & cardamom. For obtaining additional flavor, dates & sugar candies are also added.  The Virupakshi hills banana which is locally grown in the Palani hills of Tamil Nadu is mainly used due to low moisture content, unique flavor & sweetness. 

The word Panchamirtham is derived from sanskrit word “Pancha” meaning five and Amritham meaning delicacy.  Panchamirtham is a product in the sense that satisfy the devotional need of the devotees. Palani Panchamirtham is a sanskrit phrase which means :- A blend of five natural ingredients.

What makes it so unque:-

Palani Panchamirtham is a divine temple prasadam (Prasad) from the Dhandayuthapani swamy Temple in Palani, Tamilnadu  known for its unique taste, cultural significance & unique preparation. Here are some important points which makes it so unique:-

  • Traditional Ingredients:- There are basically 05 traditional natural ingredients used in the preparation of this divine prasad which includes:- Virupakshi Banana, Jaggery, Cow ghee, Honey & Cardamom. Sometimes Dates are also added. The precise portion & quality of these ingredients creates so unique taste & flavor.
  • Uniqueness of Virupakshi Banana:- Virupakshi Banana is small size banana mainly grown in Kodaikanal hills of Tamil Nadu. It has low water content as compare to the other types of banana. It has sweet  flavor & pleasant aroma. Due to this unique properties, it is used as a main ingredients in the prepration of Palani panchamiritham. Low water content help to increase the shelf life of this prasad. The quality of panchamirtham depends on the method of preparation and mixing of fruits and other ingredients needed.
  • No cooking involved:- There is No cooking involved in preparation of this scared prasad. All ingredients are mashed like a thick consistency.
  • Unique flavor & texture:- The semi solid jam like consistency and balanced sweetness of banana, jaggery & honey, combined with flavor of cardamom makes it unique.
  • Natural preparation:- It is made without adding any preservative, artificial ingredients and water. Due to low water content in virupakshi Banana, it gives a long shelf life, with the saying, ” the older the palani panchamirtham, the better it taste”
  • Cultural & religious significance: Preparation of palani panchamirtham prasadam is an ancient traditions associated with the legacy of the palani temple, one of the Lord Murugan’s six abodes. Under the strict control & use of high quality of Aavin ghee (brand name of Tamil nadu state run dairy cooperative) . It is offered as naivedyam to Lord Murugan and then distributed to devotees as prasadam.  it is believed that this prasad has divine blessings and health benefits.
  • Geographical Indication Tag:- It is the first temple prasad of Tamil Nadu which has earned the Geographical Indication Tag (GI Tag) in the year August 2019 due to its unique regional identity and traditional preparation.

Brief histroy of Palani Panchamirtham

 Palani is one of the important pilgrimage centre in india which is famous for God Muruga temple. The origin of the palani panchamirtham are belived to be around 9th century AD during the chera King Cheraman Peruman. Palain panchamirtham is first offered as a naivedyam to Lord Murugan and then distributed to devotees as prasadam.  It is believed that this prasad has not only divine blessings of Lord Murugan but also has several health benefits. Offering prasad to God means – “Nothing is ours own and everying is yours”.

Traditional method of preparation:-

According to the temple priest, they first crushed the fully ripe Virupakshi Banana & then mixed with Kandasari jaggery (grown in nearby kangeyam area) , Mountain honey or Forest honey (that is collected from the forest of TamilNadu) with cow ghee & cardamaom to create this unique prasad. All items are mixed with right proportion as per the standard receipe defined by the temple authority. No water, No preservative  & No artificial color & flavor are added in the preparation. 

Earlier it is prepared by hand but looking into the huge demand, temple authroity has introduced the Automated plant for the large scale preparation in clean & hygienic conditions. Palani Panchamirtham is prepared & marketed in by Devasthanam(temple authority) from 1980 onwards. 

GI Tag of Palani panchamirtham

In the year 2016, Arulmigu Dhandayuthapani Swamy Thirukkoil filed the application for Geographical Indication Tag (GI Tag) for Palani panchamirtham. After 03 years, Govt of India has granted the Geographical Indication Tag (GI Tag) on 14th August 2019 due to its unique regional identity and traditional preparation. 

As per the GI Application , the geographical area for production of palani panchamirtham is palani town in Dindigal District of Tamil Nadu. It lies within the latitude of 10.44° & longitude  of 77.52°. Palani Panchamirtham is prepared under the guidence of “Mysuru’s central Food Technology Research Institute”.
