Sparkling Water-A carbonated drink

What is Sparkling Water?

Sparkling water is the carbonated water that contains dissolved CO2 gas which has been injected through pressurized  into water to make it fizzy drink or to create lot of bubbles into it.

  • The carbonation can occur naturally from underground springs where dissolved Co2 gas is observed into the water. It can also be artificially added into water through pressurized during bottling process. It means adding dissolved carbon dioxide gas to any still water/Tap water/well water/spring water etc. makes sparkling water.
  • Carbonated water comes in many forms including soda water, sparkling water & even seltzer water.

Is there any difference between Sparkling Water & Sparkling Spring Water?

The only  difference between Sparkling water & Sparkling Spring water is its water source & how they are carbonated. Sparkling water can come from any water source including Tap water or well water and then artificially carbonated by adding dissolved Carbon dioxide into it during production process.

Whereas Sparkling Spring water comes from natural underground spring contains naturally occurring minerals & may have naturally carbonated from underground gases. If the dissolved Co2 gas found in low quantity in natural spring water during collection, they only producers add additional Co2 gas into the Natural sparkling spring water to create the desired Co2 gas bubble into the water.

Quantity of CO2 gas added in the sparkling water?

Sparkling water usually contains around 2 to 3 grams of pressurized dissolved Carbon dioxide gas (CO2 gas) into water under 1 to 3 times atmospheric pressure depending on the types of sparkling water & brands. When carbon dioxide gas is injected in the water, it forms carbonic acid H2CO3 and this carbonic acid also imparts tangy taste & flavor to the sparkling water.

Characteristic of sparkling water:-

Sparkling water is a Non-alcoholic & zero calorie water. It has several characteristic:-

  • Taste:- Sparkling water is more acidic in nature & slightly tangy taste due to the formation of carbonic acid when CO2 is dissolved in water.
  • Calorie free water:Sparkling water does not content any calories, sugar or any artificial sweetener.
  • pH Level:– Sparkling water is slightly acidic in nature and content pH ranges between 4 to 6.

Brief history of Sparkling water:-

Ancient people use to have sparkling water from Natural spring source occurred due to volcanic activity which naturally contains dissolved carbon dioxide gas. These natural spring water often associated with the several health benefit.
  • It was British scientist Joseph priestley who  in the year 1767 developed a method for making artificially carbonating water during experiment at his brewery.  He suspended a bowl of water over fermenting beer vat and dripped sulfuric acid onto powdered chalk (calcium carbonate) over the top of the vat to infuse carbon dioxide gas into it and created the carbonated water. This was the first artificially produced carbonated water.
  • Commercial production:-following the Joseph priestly work, a Swedish scientist Torbern Bergman in the year 1771 developed apparatus that used the sulfuric acid to generate dissolved CO2 gas in water. The process of carbonation was commercialized in the year 1786 in Switzerland. This was the first innovation allowed for the commercial production of sparkling water. Shortly after, popular beverages like Beer, Soda water, and tonic water were developed as carbonated soft drinks.
  • During the early 20th century, company like Coca cola & Pepsi began producing flavored carbonated beverage.
