What is Alibaug white onion?

Alibaug white onion is a unique variety of onion grown in the Alibaug region under the municipal counsel of Raigarh district of Maharashtra.   The uniqueness of this white onion is its cultivation in low sulpher content soil of Alibaug region, resulting it is low pungent, sweet in taste, No tear factor, contains high protein, fat & fibre and Low pyruvic acid.  Farmers of Alibaug is growing this traditional onion since ages with only traditional & geniune seed.  The color of this onion is White due to the absence or negligible amount of “Anthocyanin” (color pigment)  present in it. 

                                                                                             It is special kind of white onion but different from the normal white onion available in the market. It is popularly known as “Meetha pyaz”.   This traditional white onion is grown in different village of Alibaug tehsil of Raigarh district of Maharastra such as Kale, Khandala, pavele,Neuli,sahan, Talvali, sagaon, wadgaon & Dhavar. 

  • It is locally known as Alibaug pandhara kanda(अलिबाग पांढरा कांदा) where the word “Pandhara” means white color and “Kanda” means onion in marathi language.

Characteristic of Alibaug white onoin:- 

  • It is mainly grown in the Alibaug region under the municipal counsel of Raigarh district of Maharashtra in certain village like Kale, Khandala, pavele,Neuli,sahan, Talvali, sagaon, wadgaon & Dhavar. 
  • It is characterise by its sweetness, which is due to its unique geographical location, soil conditions (inherent salt & low sulpher content) and climate condition of Alibaug region.
  • It has pure white outer skin with milky white onion. The white color is due to the absence or negligible amount of “Anthocyanin” (color pigment)  present in it.
  • It has low pungency & sweet in taste with No tear factor or does not cause tear when cutting it.
  • The avegage weight of each onion is approx 100-150gms. 
  • It has low pyruvic acid content (3-5 µmol per gram) as compre to the regular normal red onion which contains approx 8-15 µmol per gram. 
  • It also has higher antioxidant  (mainly Quercetin compound) compound content which is a unique characteristic of this onion that contributed to the award of GI Tag by Govt of India.
  • It has high moixture content resulting shorter shelf live hardly 2-3 months under normal storage.
  • It is consider best choice for salads & chutney.

 Culinary Use of Alibaug white onion:-

Due to low pungency & sweet in taste , it has many culinary use. Some of the most common use are:-

  • In the prepartion of salad & Raita:- It is used both Raw & cooked in form. It is eaten raw as  salad or accompaniment in almost every maharastrian meal such as :-Vada pav, Misal pav, pav bhaji, sabudana vada, Kothimbir vadi, Bhel puri, Pani puri stuffing, Poha etc . One of the main ingredient in Koshimbir salad (Maharasstrian salad) with cucumber, tomato, peanut, lemon & chilli. 
  • In the preparation of various chutney :–  It is used in the preparation of Kanda Chutney (White onion chutney) , Lahsun ki chutney , Tomato chutney etc.
  • In the preparation of gravy & curries:- It is used in the vide variety of cooked dishes such as soup, stir fries dishes & base ingredient for most of the Maharastrian gravy.
  • Used in pickling :- Alibaug white onion can be used in the pickling .

Geographical Indication tag 

The alibaug white onion has been granted Geographical Indication tagging on 16th November 2022 in the class 31. The geographical indication number is 685. The GI Application has been registered in the name of Alibag pandhara kanda shetkari utpadak Gat which was facilitated by Agriculture Technology Managment Agency , Dept of Agriculture, Govt of Maharastra. 

Nutritional value & health benefit 

Alibaug white onion is nutritious with high in protein ,fibre and antioxidant as compare to the normal onion. One cup of chopped alibaug white onion contains approx:- 64gms of calories, 15gms of carbohydrate, 7 gms sugar, 2gm protein, zero cholesterol and small amount of minerals such as calcium, Iron, magnesium & phasphorous. 

          According to Ayurveda , it can be helpful in remedy of various disease like cough, cold & fever etc.
